Security is the most important factor people look at when buying a home, a new survey has revealed.

Research commissioned by the forthcoming Homebuyer Show found that more than seven out of every ten homebuyers said good security was essential to their decision to buy a property.

This figure made security more important to the decision on where to buy than the overall condition and size of a property.

Security was also ranked above the quality of the area a property was in or its surrounding facilities.

Good transport links, good schools, closeness to amenities and distance from family were cited as influences on where people move to in a MORE TH>N survey last year - which also ranked security as the most important factor.

But most buyers see the condition of a home's interior as irrelevant to the decision of where to buy, today's Homebuyer Show survey revealed.

A third of buyers added that they were not bothered about local schools and a similar number said they were indifferent to the size and state of the property's garden.

"Home security has been moving up the homebuyer's agenda for a number of years but it has now become one of the main priorities. If you want to sell your home quickly upgrading your security systems will be a major help," Nick Clark, managing director of Homebuyer Events, noted.
